Place names in Fryslân.
The local authorities have autonomy in defining the language form and spelling of street names, villages and towns within their jurisdiction. Hence the spelling of the names, both in Dutch and Frisian, may not always correspond with the general spelling rules of either language. In this list. the spellings used by the municipalities

  • The official name
  • The name in other language versions (in brackets), if there is one
  • A number corresponding to the municipality, found on the main site of the list of place names

Frisian language forms are rendered in bold. Language forms of dialects (only for Het Bildt, eastern Kollumerland, Wadden Islands and West- and Eaststellingwerf, where Frisian is not - wholly - indigenous) are rendered in italic. Combinations of bold and italic mean that the name is identical in both Frisian and non-Frisian local dialect. Seperate Dutch forms, where they exist, are rendered in plain roman. If no seperate Dutch form is rendered, the official form is also used in Dutch. The orange list comprises the unofficial forms. The official form is given behind the stroke.

The Editors, September 1997.

The orange list constitutes the unofficial forms. The official form is given behind the stroke.
