Every year the director of the Fryske Akademy appoints new members on the 'Akademydei' (Day of the Academy, the dies natalis or birthday of the Fryske Akademy). Members should not be confused with supporters of the Fryske Akademy. Members are chosen because of their merits for Frisian science or culture. Members can be appointed in three categories:

a. Science
 concerning Friesland or Frisian
b. Frisian culture

c. Ongoing interest in Frisian science or Frisian culture in general

This honour is conferred on seven to eight people each year. Members have been appointed ever since the founding of the Fryske Akademy in 1938. At this moment the Fryske Akademy has about 450 members. Members are important to the Akademy as ambassadors and as a think tank. By means of members’ days, the Fryske Akademy wants to strengthen the bonds with its members. The first members’ day was held on the 9th of June 2012.
