In the present article a survey is given of the ideas and initiatives that led to the foundation of the Fryske Akademy in 1938. The concept of a Frisian Acamy of Sciences was brought up for the first time during World War I. It took, however, over twenty years for the plan to become reality. The provincial Education Council took the first stap. The Fryske Akademy could come into being because of the fact that the Provincial Government started to actively partake in Frisian language planning. Prof.dr Titus Brandsma and dr G.A. Wumkes were the moast important initiators of the founding of the Fryske Akademy.
