The Franeker and Groningen university libraries before 1670

In this project two collections of books were investigated which are of fundamental importance to the intellectual history of the northern parts of the Dutch Republic: the libraries of the universities of Franeker (founded in 1585) and Groningen (founded in 1614) during the first decades of their existence.

At the present most of the books are deposited in the Provincial Library of Friesland and the University library of Groningen respectively. The remaining books of the libraries formed the main source  for this research project; besides the seventeenth-century catalogues and archivalia are investigated.

The result has beeen a digital repertory and a series of papers about the importance of university libraries for our knowledge  of intellectual and political life in the seventeenth century.
