The Art History study group
(Keunsthistoarysk Wurkferbân) at the Fryske Akademy exists since
1988. It is engaged with the distribution of knowledge about visual
arts in Fryslân and strives towards the enrichment of that
knowledge among a great group of interested people. We define the
visual arts quite broadly as to include architecture and the
applied arts as well. The current number of members of our study
group is around one hundred. We try to introduce to all our members
new developments in the visual arts, the architecture and related
forms of art in our province. Of course we also welcome such
initiatives from the members themselves. In doing so the study
group on art history is a very active one.
Activities
Although being created quite
recently, the Art History study group has already organized a great
variety of activities, both together with other groups, and as
being a guest of the numerous provincial and local museums and
exhibitions throughout Fryslân. In some other cases the members are
invited by a private person. The meetings of the study group do not
only take place in the beautiful Akademy seat It Coulonhûs, but
regularly our members can become acquainted with expressions at
venues throughout the entire province. Just to name a few of such
activities:
- Discussion about iconography of recent discovered fresco's in Burgum/Bergum
- Illustrations - in fergotten field
- About the family Bottema in the literature
- New statues and old sculptures in the centre of Leeuwarden.
Database
A number of members is
currently engaged in a survey on Frisian visual arts. They are
designing a documentation system, aimed at the works of (living and
deceased) Frisian artists to be found in public collections. This
database Fryske Keunsters is now available.
As a rule some six activities
are organized on a yearly basis.
