Aim

The Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk (The Frisian Heraldry Board) advises on flags, flag-proceedings, ribbands, banners en standards.

The Rie also deals with coats of arms of the government, the province, the municipalities, the water districts, town, townlet and village arms and family arms.

Foundation

The Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk was founded in 1956 and is the oldest provincial heraldic board in The Netherlands.
Members of the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk are appointed on the basis of their expertise; it isn't like a wurkferbân (working group), which you can freely join.

Activities

Over the years, the Rie has occupied itself with:
  • the improvement of the municipal arms of Terschelling (1963) and  Wymbritseradeel (1975);
  • composing new coats of arms after the reorganisation of municipalities (1984);
  • composing the new flags and banners of the municipalities mentioned above;
  • composing the arms, flags and banners for the new district water boards (since 1997);
  • composing new arms and flags for the villages in all municipalities of Fryslân (for about 212 villages since 1965; overview);
  • composing and registering new family arms for families from Fryslân en for Frisians abroad; these arms have been published in several Genealogyske Jierboeken;
  • Registration of arms, found on graves, memorial stones or accompanying research in archives.
