Frisians abroad

Frisians abroad
[sold out]

"It’s like uprooting a bunch of marigolds in full bloom.
Replanted on the other side of the world
perhaps they’ll bloom once again, but the hole in
the ground from which they were torn remains."

A Frisian emigrant, as cited by Speerstra,
Volkskrant, 16 Oct. 1999

Frisians have spread across the entire globe. For different reasons they left Friesland to build new lives abroad. What has happened to them? Did they find new meaning in their lives? To what extent are their identities still determined by their Frisian roots? What is the language they use in their daily lives?

The present book provides answers to these kinds of questions via the results of a large-scale study of Frisian emigrants carried out between December 1999 and May 2000.

This study is part of a longitudinal research project by the Fryske Akademy and the University of Groningen on Frisian emigrants. It has its roots in the event Simmer 2000 which provided a special opportunity to reach Frisans throughout the world.

The book is aimed at Frisian emigrants and all those who have a personal or professional interest in their fate. It sheds light on the adjustment processes of the group ’Frisians far Abroad’.
This insight is not only interesting for its sociological, psychological, and linguistic observations of the Frisian community, it also contributes to the current debate on how migrants might integrate more beneficially into society.

Close to 2500 Frisians responded to our call to participate. Whether it was their helpful nature or their steadfast commitment to their Frisian roots which led to such an impressive response we cannot say; but without their assistance the present study would not have been possible.

Consequently, we would like to warmly thank all those who participated for their cooperation. They will hopefully recognize themselves in these pages and learn from the experiences of fellow emigrants throughout the world.
