But the most important thing is the description (in Dutch) of the meaning of words and here it is of no significance whether the relevant word is fundamental, derived or compound in form. Where possible, straight translation is made to suffice but often, especially in the case of fundamental words, more detailed elucidation is necessary. Such elucidation of meaning is as far as possible illustrated with quotations from various sources and oral assignments.

Much attention is given in the WFT to the permanent associations within which words present themselves. This goes not only for expressions and proverbs or sayings but also in cases like oan ‘e han fan (by hân) and troch de wei fan (by wei). Such permanent associations are typographically set apart to make them easy to find. Proverbs and sayings are given at the end of the item.

The Wurdboek fan de Frysk Taal/Woordenboek der Friese Taal provides a rich source of knowledge regarding the vocabulary of New Frisian and thus a useful aid to linguistic and other research. But the reader may also simply peruse it for pleasure, wondering at all the words with which he or she was not familiar, their variety and all those expressions and sayings that provide enormous enjoyment.
