De Vrije Fries (The Free Frisian) is a yearbook that is published in cooperation with the Keninklik Frysk Genoatskip foar Skiednis en Kultuer (Royal Frisian Society for History and Culture). The first volume of De Vrije Fries was published in 1839. De Vrije Fries is one of the oldest scientific journals in the Netherlands.
History of art en literature
The yearboek contains mainly contributions on Frisian history. Important themes have to do with the history of art en literature. De Vrije Fries is also intended as a platform for the debate on present-day Frisian culture, and therefore welcomes essays and critical contributions in this area.
