Members and membership
Ever since the establishment of the Fryske Akademy in 1938, new Akademy members have been appointed every year. Akademy members are persons who have positively and demonstrably made a special contribution to the scientific or social field of the Frisian language, culture and Fryslân in general.
Nomination
Donors, employees, and members of the Fryske Akademy can nominate individuals for appointment as members of the Fryske Akademy throughout the year. On Akademy Day, new members are appointed by the director-administrator, who is assisted in assessing the nominations by the appointment committee.
Function of the members
When the Fryske Akademy was founded in 1938, a hundred people were appointed members. It was then the intention that these members would do work for the Fryske Akademy, but no official distinction was ever made - as was done at that time in other institutions - between ordinary and working members. Over the decades, many members have also contributed to the numerous working groups and associations of the Fryske Akademy.
Today, members are important to the Fryske Akademy as ambassadors, who are invited to actively contribute ideas in the field of scientific research and the social position of the Fryske Akademy. But above all, membership is a recognition of one's scientific or cultural merits.
The Fryske Akademy currently has about 240 members.
