Getting to Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden is a two-hour train ride from Schiphol Airport. Direct connections from Schiphol Airport leave every hour at –.34. Alternatively, trains from Schiphol Airport to Groningen leave every hour at –.04; these offer a cross-platform change to Leeuwarden at Zwolle.

For participants from South East England (London-Southend), Southern Germany (Munich) or Denmark (Copenhagen), flights to Groningen Airport Eelde may be a convenient alternative. From here, Leeuwarden is easily accessibly by car or by train.

About Leeuwarden/Fryslân

Leeuwarden/Ljouwert is the capital of the bilingual province of Fryslân. In 2018, Leeuwarden–Fryslân was European Capital of Culture. Here, Frisian is recognised as an official language in addition to Dutch. Frisian may be used in courts and in communication with the government, and is part of the primary and secondary school curriculum. It is estimated that Frisian is the first language for just over 50% of the inhabitants of Fryslân. This proportion has slowly decreased over the last decades, leading UNESCO to classify Frisian as 'vulnerable'. In addition to Frisian and Dutch, various Frisian dialects, Low-Saxon dialects, Dutch-Frisian contact varieties and immigrant languages are spoken.
