Culture festival Uit in Huis: Welcome to the Fryske Akademy!

Saturday 3 September is the start of the new cultural season in Leeuwarden. Cultural institutions invite everyone to see, hear and experience. Walk from theater to music and from stories to workshops. And walk to the Fryske Akademy! Because our institute also opens its doors.

Visit the Doelestraat on Saturday 3 September between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM and go back in time in the Gryn room, or see how the former Noorderkerk has been transformed into a workspace for scientists. For those who also want to gain substantive knowledge, we provide mini lectures Old Frisian!

The accommodation of the Fryske Akademy has a rich history. It was only a short distance before the buildings were no longer there. This was prevented by the purchase of the Coulonhuis by civil-law notary Nanne Ottema 1937. At the time, the municipality set the condition that everything would be refurbished and 'to keep the Coulonhuis available for the promotion and study of older and new Frisian culture'. That has happened over time. The last renovation was in 2016.

The study of the older and new Frisian culture has been going on since 1938 – when the Fryske Akademy was founded and was given a few rooms in the building – to this day! The Fryske Akademy is committed to fundamental and applied scientific research into the Frisian language, history and culture. After almost 85 years, that assignment, which the Frisian community gave the Akademy when it was founded, is still leading.
