Biografie

Reinier Salverda (Arnhem 1948) is Honorary Professor of Dutch Language and Literature at University College London (UCL), and Honorary Research Fellow of the Fryske Akademy.

Upon completing his studies in Dutch Language and Literature at the Amsterdam Free University (in 1976), he worked for four years as a linguistics researcher for the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). He was a Special Graduate Student of Noam Chomsky at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1979-80, and then worked for eight years (1981-89) at the Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta.

In 1989 he was appointed to the Chair in Dutch Language and Literature at University College London (UCL), where he is Honorary Professor of Dutch Language and Literature today. He publishes regularly on Dutch colonial and postcolonial literature, modern literature of the East Indies (present-day Indonesia). He is a contributor to the new critical edition of Guillaume Thomas Raynal's Histoire des deux Indes (2 volumes published in 2010), and member of de Advisory Board of the Frisian regional encyclopaedia Nieuwe Encyclopedie van Fryslân (3 volumes, to be published in 2016).

From 2006 until his retirement in 2013, Salverda was Director of the Fryske Akademy in Leeuwarden. He is a member of the Assemblée Générale of the Comité International Permanent des Linguistes (CIPL), deputy editor of the Dutch-Flemish yearbook The Low Countries, member of the editorial board of the Dutch-Flemish cultural magazine Ons Erfdeel, and chairman of the Dutch Memory of the World National Committee for UNESCO.
