Biography
Oebele Vries (Westergeest, 1947) studied history with minor in Old Frisian at the University of Groningen (RUG), where he obtained his PhD in 1986. From 1974 to 1978, he was seconded to ZWO as a researcher at first the Frysk Ynstitút of the RUG (publication of Old Frisian charters) and then the Institute of History of the RUG (project Bureaucratisation. Civil servants and public administration in the Netherlands). In 1978, this was followed by an appointment as academic assistant/university lecturer for Old Frisian (later also Frisian history) at the Frysk Ynstitút/Opleiding Frisian Taal en Cultuur, again at the RUG (until retirement in 2012). Then guest researcher, first at the Opleiding Friese Taal en Cultuur and since 2014 at the Fryske Akademy.
His publications have appeared in the field of Dutch and especially Frisian history (especially on the late Middle Ages and the 16th century, but also on later times), Old Frisian philology and Frisian legal history.
In 2009, he was awarded the province of Fryslân's Joast Halbertsmapriis for his entire oeuvre.
