Mission

As a future-oriented network institution, the Fryske Akademy conducts, shares and facilitates scientific research into the Frisian case in an international and multidisciplinary perspective. This concerns both fundamental and applied research. The focus is on Frisian, the multilingual society, regional history in an international perspective, minority languages and cultures and the development of digital infrastructures – preferably in cross-connections and in a comparative perspective.

A small institute with great ambition and an even larger network: our Fryske Akademy is an inspiring exchange place for scientific knowledge. An exceptional 'research oasis' where staff and guests conduct open science with impact. As a research institute, originating from society, we have a privileged position, which we make optimal use of. We do this based on the conviction that we can best serve the community by conducting research at a high academic level.

With multidisciplinary research, the Fryske Akademy makes innovative contributions to the international scientific discourse, the Fryske Akademy contributes to the academic climate in Leeuwarden and Fryslân, and generates inspiring fundamental and applicable knowledge for and about society. The Fryske Akademy works on high-quality science based on strong engagement with Fryslân and the Frisians, with an eye for social impact.

Goals

The objectives of the Fryske Akademy for the period 2022-2027 are aimed at profiling, acquisition, collaboration and organisational development. They are described in detail in the Strategic Plan 2022-2027.

  • Our profiling goal is that we have noticeably increased our reputation and recognisability. We do this through our research of scientific quality and with social relevance.
  • Our goal in the field of acquisition is that project acquisition and implementation and attracting talent are core activities to which everyone contributes from their own role. Creativity, collaboration and leadership at all levels are stimulated.
  • The cooperation goal is to have cooperation as modus operandi, both internally and externally, in terms of content and in other areas. We strive to strengthen ties with external partners based on confidence in our own agenda, and to actively share our work with everyone who has an interest in it.
  • The organisational development objective is to further develop the institute into a stable but flexible network organisation. In 2027, we want to have measurably more diversity in our workforce than in 2020. An inspiring, stimulating and safe working environment is important for this, with social safety being the main focus.
