The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, or KNAW) is responsible for the scientific monitoring of the Fryske Akademy. In this framework, a study evaluating the institute's research is conducted once in every six years on behalf of the KNAW. An external evaluation committee gives an independent expert opinion on the scientific achievements of the Fryske Akademy over the past years. 

On 4 June 2024, an external review committee visited to form an independent and expert opinion on the Fryske Akademy's scientific performance. This visit had been moved up in time, due to the reorganisation that the Fryske Akademy went through between 2018 and 2020.

In preparation for the visitation, a working group from the Fryske Akademy had written an extensive self-evaluation report. After a day of interviews with researchers and stakeholders, the committee got a good impression of our organisation.
