Fedde Schurerlêzing 2025, De Kanselarij, Leeuwarden (NL - SOLD OUT)
Fedde Schurer was Frisian, but he also had a difficult relationship with Frisian culture. He was very committed to the Frisian language and the Frisian question. But for him, minority rights, social issues and even language transcended provincial boundaries. This was sometimes a struggle, with an environment that did not always understand him well.
This struggle still exists for many people today; between ancestry, origin and future, and how these overlap. In an era of globalisation, but also growing conservatism, Frisian identity can be both liberating and burdensome. Are you proud of the country or region where you grew up? Does it make you happy? Does it make you proud? What will you take with you into the future?
Oomen en IJsselmuiden
Poet, writer, performer and musician Joost Oomen is coming to Leeuwarden to talk about his vision on the theme “Grutsk op Fryslân ... of krekt net?”. Also joining us is Sylvana IJsselmuiden, who travelled all over the country as a presenter and actress, but recently returned to Leeuwarden.
About the Fedde Schurerlêzing
Since 2010, the Fedde Schurer Lecture has been held in Leeuwarden in November, organised this year by De Fryske Beweging, together with the Fryske Akademy and the Leeuwarder Courant.
Fedde Schurer (1898 - 1968) was a Frisian poet and journalist. He also served in the House of Representatives for the PvdA. Schurer was a Christian peace activist and a leading figure in Frisian culture. For many years, Schurer was editor-in-chief of the Friese Koerier; his stylistically brilliant and incisive articles were well known both within and outside Fryslân.
On Saturday 15 November 2025, the programme will start at 2.30 p.m. (doors open at 2 p.m.) and last until 4.30 p.m. Afterwards, there will be a sociable get-together with drinks and snacks. Admission is free, but registration is required.
