Biography

Hans Mol (Kapelle, 1954) studied history and historical geography at VU University Amsterdam, where he also obtained his PhD (cum laude) in 1991. He joined the Fryske Akademy in 1986 as research associate for medieval history, until his retirement in 2023. Between 1996 and 2008, he was head of the Department of History.

Since 2003, on behalf of the Fryske Akademy, he had also been affiliated to Leiden University as associate professor for the history of the Frisian lands in the Middle Ages. He often writes about monasteries, crusades and warfare. In 2011, he published a book on the spiritual orders of knights in the Low Countries entitled Fighting, praying and nursing. In 2013, he and Peter van der Meer published the source edition De Beneficiaalboeken van Friesland, 1543. And in 2017, his monograph on The Frisian People's Armies between 1480 and 1560 was published. He was also involved in the development of a historical GIS for the Netherlands: HisGIS.

Hans Mol is co-editor of the journal The Medieval Low Countries and is a board member of the Internationale Kommission zur Erforschung des Deutschen Ordens.
