Suzanne Dekker in European discussion panel in Austria

Sociolinguistic researcher Suzanne Dekker was in Graz, Austria, to take part in a discussion on what can motivate newcomers to learn regional or minority languages.

This discussion panel at the conference of the Council of Europe's European Centre for Modern Languages was co-organised by the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning in Leeuwarden and the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD). The title was “What motivates newcomers to learn RMLs? Language attitudes in secondary school, the role of RMLs in integrating newcomers”.

The event took place against the backdrop of the Council of Europe's 2022 recommendation on the importance of multilingual and intercultural education for democratic culture and drew on the Council's expertise in the field of regional and minority languages. It was attended by designated representatives of the 38 member states of the ECML and the European Union, as well as key networks and associations active in this field.

More information is to be found at the event's website.
