Invitation European Day of Languages

The Europeesk Buro foar Lytse Talen en it Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning (part of the Fryske Akademy) cordially invite you to the celebration of the European Day of Languages on Thursday 26 September, ‘En... AKSJE! films yn regionale or minderheidstalen'.

EBLT has been drawing attention to the support of film productions in minority languages for many years. Fortunately, more and more films in minority languages are being made throughout Europe, at an increasingly higher level. But what are the experiences and productions of filmmakers in our country? What are filmmakers and producers working on, what challenges do they face and where do they find the necessary support? On the European Day of Languages, we will talk to several filmmakers from the Northern Netherlands:

- Johanneke Dijkstra, Frisian film ‘Kriich’ (2024)
- Rob Camies, Drenth film ‘Grenzeloos Verraad’ (2023)
- Steven de Jong, Frisian film ‘Grutte Pier’ (2022)
- Janko Krist, Frisian film ‘Stjer’ (2021)

Journalist Onno Falkena and EBLT president Gerard de Jong will lead the evening. Film clips will also be shown on the big screen. Afterwards, there will be snacks and drinks.

European Day of Languages

The European Day of Languages is an initiative of the Council of Europe and has been celebrated since 2001. There are more than 200 languages in Europe. At the Council of Europe, 82 regional or minority languages from 207 language communities have been recognised. In the Netherlands, these include Frysk, Yiddish, Limburgish, Lowlands Saxon, Papiamints and the languages of Roma and Sinti.
