Kick-off project ‘King Redbad’ in Leeuwarden

Exhibition Redbad

The Fryske Akademy and several other Dutch and German institutions have a preparatory meeting for the exhibition on the medieval king Redbad this week. The kick-off is at the Fries Museum, where the travelling exhibition will also be the first to be shown from September 2026. Besides the Fries Museum and the Fryske Akademy, the partners are the Ostfriesische Landschaft, Mythe Makers, NIhK Wilhelmshaven, Firda, Learning Hub Friesland, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and the Ostfriesischen Landesmuseum Emden.

King Redbad

The northern Netherlands and northern Germany share a rich history and cultural heritage. The exhibition highlights this historical relationship through the Frisian king Redbad (<670-719). On behalf of the Fryske Akademy, Old Frisian scholar and historical anthropologist Han Nijdam is involved in the project. Nijdam has several publications on King Redbad to his credit.

Travelling expo

The exhibition on Redbad is the sequel to the exhibitions ‘We Vikings’ (2019) and ‘Freedom, Feuds, Purgatory’ (2022) at the Fries Museum. From spring 2027, the travelling exhibition can be seen at the Ostfriesischen Landesmuseum in Emden. It is possible that the exhibition will then travel on to the Niedersächsischen Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch in Oldenburg.

Support

Project REDBAD is being carried out as part of the Interreg VI programme Deutschland-Nederland and is co-financed by the European Union, the Lower Saxony Ministry for Federal and European Affairs and Regional Development, the Province of Fryslân and the Province of Groningen.
