The book Verhalen die hout snijden (2023) presents a genealogical study of the ‘Family tree of a “Lemster” family De Vries’ in the form of stories. The title of the book refers both to the craft professions of the ancestors and to that narrative approach to genealogy. As far as is known, the family tree took root around 1580 in Opsterland, mainly in Beetsterzwaag, and was Baptist in origin. Around 1760, Jacob Rinderts, grandson of Rev Ulbe van Sinderen, left for Lemmer. From the late 19th century, the descendants spread across the Netherlands.

The lecture, entitled ‘Imagination verZINt’, raises the question of the advantages and disadvantages of faction as a form of presenting genealogical research. Attention is drawn to the importance of church sources in genealogy.
