Frisian Council for Heraldry

As its name suggests, the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk (Frisian Council for Heraldry) is a committee that gives advice. This is in the field of arms of the province, municipalities, water boards, the arms of towns, spots and villages and existing family arms. Moreover, the Rie designs coats of arms, flags and pennants for villages, families and corporations such as schools, associations, etc., among others.

Furthermore, the Rie is active in the field of flag protocol, advising on restorations (heraldic images), giving lectures and heraldry lessons. In addition, some members provide publications on various heraldic subjects. However, it must be related to Fryslân.

Founded in 1956, the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk is the oldest provincial heraldic college in the Netherlands and consists of specialists, who have been appointed members of the Rie on the basis of their expertise. This is therefore not a study circle that is freely accessible. Donors and members of the Akademy can therefore not become members of the council.

Heraldry Day 2026

It is no coincidence that Heraldry Day is being held in Friesland this year: the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk of the Fryske Akademy is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the annual gathering, which is dedicated to heraldry, is being held in Leeuwarden. In addition, the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk is publishing a new edition on this day, a booklet entitled: “Village Coats of Arms in Friesland”.

Heraldic Day is organised by the Dutch Society for Heraldry and the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk of the Fryske Akademy. It will feature interesting talks on family coats of arms, the presentation of a historic certificate of nobility, and a heraldic market, where members of the Guild of Heraldic Artists will be in attendance.
