Obe Postma Lecture: Anne Merkuur, 'Feroarjend Frysk', Tresoar, Leeuwarden (NL)

With the launch of the new Bachelor’s degree in Frisian at the University of Groningen, the question of the future of Frisian studies has once again come to the fore. What, exactly, is the Frisian language that we study? How is the language changing under the influence of multilingualism and new forms of language use? And how is Frisian studies responding to these changes? This lecture examines the relationship between language change and the academic study of Frisian.

De title of the lecture is ‘Frisian in flux – on language change and the future of Frisian studies ’ ('Feroarjend Frysk - oer taalferoaring en de takomst fan de frisistyk'). Anne Merkuur (Heerenveen, 1989) works as a linguist and lecturer at the Fryske Akademy and the University of Groningen. In 2021, she was awarded a PhD for her thesis on language change in Frisian verbs.

This lecture is organised in collaboration with Studium Generale Leeuwarden and the Obe Postma Selskip. The Obe Postma Selskip, whose aim is to bring the work of Obe Postma to the attention of as wide and diverse an audience as possible and to keep it there, also seeks to contribute to a vibrant culture in Fryslân. To this end, the Obe Postma Lecture is held once a year, in collaboration with Tresoar.
