Presentation Jelske Dijkstra, NPLD Annual Conference, Stockholm (SE)

At the annual conference of the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD), Dr Jelske Dijkstra, coordinator of our Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning, will contribute to the discussion ‘Beyond Sweden: Lessons from Across Europe.’

The organisation has invited Dijkstra on account of the expertise of the Mercator European Research Centre and Fryslân’s long-standing involvement with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Dijkstra has been asked to share her views on how smaller languages can function within robust legal and institutional frameworks. Naturally, she can draw on the experiences of the Frisian language within the context of the European Charter in the Netherlands.

This year’s annual NPLD conference will take place on 8 May in Stockholm, with the overarching theme ‘25 years of the European Charter in Sweden: achievements, gaps and future directions in Sweden and beyond’.

About the NPLD

The NPLD is a European network dedicated to language policy and planning for constitutional, regional and minority languages across Europe. Its members include national and regional authorities, universities and associations.

The Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning, part of the Fryske Akademy, has been an associate member of the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) for many years. Mercator is a member of the NPLD steering group.

In 2023, Mercator was also invited to join the NPLD University Network (UniNet), a network of universities and research institutions active in the fields of national minorities, multilingualism, minority languages, language rights, language policy and language education.
