Book launch 'Middelnederlandse oorkonden uit Friesland (tot 1501)'

Guest researcher Oebele Vries of the Fryske Akademy has compiled a book of medieval charters from Fryslân.

This book will be published by Noordboek publishers. Dr. Oebele Vries will present the book on Thursday, July 10, to his former student Anne Tjerk Popkema, who, like Vries, has a great passion for Old Frisian charters and Old Frisian. Vries will present the book after his guest lecture to 35 international students at the Old Frisian Summer School and offer it to Popkema.

Charters

Medieval charters are considered an important source for historical and linguistic research. With regard to Friesland, attention has so far focused on the Frisian-language charters. The texts of these charters have been published earlier, under the title Oudfries(ch)e Oorkonden, in four hefty volumes and a somewhat more modest supplement volume. The Dutch-language charters from Friesland are much less numerous, at least until the beginning of the sixteenth century. This edition contains the texts of these Middle Dutch charters from the present province of Friesland - including Stellingwerf - up to and including the year 1500. Most of them come from the archives of the numerous monasteries that counted late medieval Friesland.

This edition is edited by Oebele Vries. His other publications include Ferdban. Oudfriese oorkonden en hun verhaal and Asega, is het dingtijd?

The book is for sale for €29.90 at several (online) bookstores.
