Take part in the survey on the scents of Friesland!

What are some typical Frisian scents? And are there any Frisian scents that are so valuable that we want to preserve them as cultural heritage? Anyone with a connection to Friesland is invited to share their thoughts on this topic. Please fill out the questionnaire for the research project “A Nose for Heritage.”

Launch 'A Nose for Heritage'

On March 24, 2026, the fragrant launch of the research project “A Nose for Heritage”—a collaboration between the KNAW Humanities Cluster (Meertens Institute and NL-Lab), the Fryske Akademy, and IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances)—took place at Museum Joure. At the birthplace of Douwe Egberts, various researchers, Deputy Eke Folkerts of the Province of Friesland, and Director Iris Nutma of Museum Joure spoke about the importance of scent in preserving heritage.

Afterward, the dozens of curious visitors will have the chance to join a scent walk or stop by the scent table to share their thoughts on specific scents. And during a visit to De Jouwer, there’s naturally no shortage of opportunities to smell and taste coffee.
