'Feroarjend Frysk': Anne Merkuur key note speaker at Obe Postmalêzing 2026
With the launch of the new Bachelor’s degree in Frisian at the University of Groningen, the question of the future of Frisian studies has once again come to the fore. What, exactly, is the Frisian language that we study? How is the language changing under the influence of multilingualism and new forms of language use? And how is Frisian studies responding to these changes? This lecture examines the relationship between language change and the academic study of Frisian.
Anne Merkuur (Heerenveen, 1989) works as a linguist and lecturer at the Fryske Akademy and the University of Groningen. In 2021, she was awarded a PhD for her thesis on language change in Frisian verbs, ‘Changes in modern Frisian verbal inflection’.
