Photo report international conference Mercator online

On Thursday 7 and Friday 8 November, about 150 researchers from Europe, North America and Asia came to Leeuwarden to participate in a conference on minority languages and multilingualism in education. The event was organised by the team of Mercator, the European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning, which is part of the Fryske Akademy. The theme of the conference was ‘Shaping Policy for Minority Languages and Multilingualism’.

The conference was opened by deputy Eke Folkerts of the province of Fryslân and by Dr Nelleke IJssennagger-van der Pluijm, director of the Fryske Akademy. As Mercator's new project leader, Dr Jelske Dijkstra also extended a warm welcome to everyone. Both Folkerts and Dijkstra took the opportunity to put Cor van der Meer, former Mercator project leader (photo), in the limelight at his ‘farewell conference’. Van der Meer was named guest of honour of the entire conference by Dijkstra.

Successful edition

The organisers spoke of a successful edition. All presentations in all three halls were broadcast live on a special film channel free of charge, so everyone, especially our international partners and stakeholders and those of the researchers, could easily watch at home.

A photo report, taken by Ydwine R Scarse, is now available on the conference website.
