Symposium 'Flood 1825' on 12 april in the Woudagemaal

On Saturday, April 12, the Maritime History Working Group of the Fryske Akademy, in collaboration with the Fries Scheepvaartmuseum and Tresoar, is organizing a symposium on the 'forgotten' natural disaster in the year 1825.

Lotte Jensen (Radboud University Nijmegen), author of the award-winning book 'Wij en het water' (We and the water) is the keynote speaker. Shorter presentations will be given by Otto Knottnerus, Frits David Zeiler, Mark Raat and Jan-Dirk Wassenaar, among others. They will discuss the flood disaster in the Dutch and German Wadden area, the disaster in Friesland and contemporary testimonies and ego documents. Erik Betten will hold an interview with author Hylke Speerstra. Dike reeve Luzette Kroon will conclude the symposium with a contemporary reflection.

The symposium will take place in the Ir. DF Woudagemaal (pumping station) in Lemmer. The meeting is one of the activities organised in the context of commemorating the flood of 1825, an initiative of the working group 'The Forgotten Flood of 1825'.

The entrance fee is €25,- (incl. lunch and a guided tour) per person. You can buy tickets online, via our ticket shop. We would like to hear in advance whether you will be joining the guided tour.

The full programme can be found on the Symposium 'Flood 1825' webpage.
