Hessel de Walle's “Memorabilia” database transferred to Fryske Akademy

Author and data specialist Hessel de Walle has officially transferred his “Memorabilia” database to the Fryske Akademy. The database consists of inscriptions from gravestones, mourning plaques, wall stones, birth spoons and similar objects.

Research into funerary culture

De Walle is a member of the Fryske Akademy's Epitaphs Committee and has worked on the database for 25 years. He was supported in this by other volunteers, researchers and (citizen) scientists. The database contains around 11,000 objects from before 1811.

The transfer of the database is part of a broader line of research into the funerary culture of Friesland by Tamara Dijkstra, funerary expert at the Fryske Akademy. It will be continued in collaboration with De Walle and the other members of the Epitaphs Committee.
