Marcel Niekus
Marcel Niekus is an archaeologist specializing in research on the Stone Age. In 1995, Niekus graduated from the University of Groningen. As chairman of the Stone Foundation, Niekus is committed to expanding knowledge about prehistoric communities in the Netherlands by conducting research and making it accessible to scientists, policymakers, and the general public. In 2007, Niekus, along with a group of students from the University of Groningen, discovered a plot of land containing numerous artifacts—such as hand axes and flint tools—that point to the presence of Neanderthals. Together with amateur archaeologists, Niekus has been investigating the site for years and will now, on behalf of the Province of Drenthe, search for other materials, such as bone remains. In 2018, Niekus co-authored the book The Middle Stone Age in Fryslân: Hunter-Gatherers on the Shores of the Burgumer Mar with Yuri van Koerveringe, as part of the Archeology in Fryslân-series.
