Collection 'Schoolmasters in Friesland (1600-1950)' now complete

In 2008, the Fryske Akademy website published the data on the heads of schools in Fryslân between about 1600 and 1950, collected by teacher-historian Hartman Sannes (1890-1956). Last year there was an addition and now all the data collected by Hartman Sannes on schoolmasters in Fryslân are available online.

Some of the material had not been published before: for instance, documents on the schoolmasters of the towns of Harlingen, Hindeloopen and Leeuwarden have been added. Data from Het Bildt, Tietsjerksteradeel and Wonseradeel have also been added.

Own context

The aim of the project was to display the material in the same way as Sannes himself did in the regional newspapers; in principle, it is published without corrections or additions. In this way, all the data collected by Sannes also remain in their own context.

An effort has been made to adhere to Sannes' original texts as far as possible; obviously, spelling adjustments have already taken place and the text has been modified in some places. Only in those cases where Sannes made an obvious mistake has it been (tacitly) corrected by Peter van der Meer.
