This year 372 people participated in the qualification for It Grut Frysk Diktee, 115 more than last year. The 20 best of them may compete in the grand final on May 23 in the Steateseal in the Provinsjehûs in Leeuwarden. On Wednesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m., Omrop Fryslân will broadcast the dictation on television.

That so many people took part in the qualification this year is really fantastic, says jury chairman Hindrik Sijens of the Fryske Akademy: "Frisian is really alive among young and old, you can see that in the 20 participants who are competing in the final; six of the twenty finalists are younger than thirty. We are very happy with that."
This year's dictation text was written by singer Iris Kroes and deals with a particular phase in life.

Teams
In addition to the 20 participants who have qualified, five teams are also competing. There is a team of Frisian artists including Johannes Rypma, Pieter Sahieter and Nynke Heeg. Another team is formed by journalists from the Friesch Dagblad (Erik Betten and Ellen Stickelbroek), Omrop Fryslân (Diana de Groot and Timo Jepkema) and the Leeuwarder Courant (Pier Abe Santema and Melle Veltman). There are also teams with vicars, Pabo students and group of youngsters from the shed Beunhok.bv from Twijzelerheide.
The winner of It Grut Frysk Diktee goes home with 'the golden roof'. For the winning team there is a separate prize.

'Warming up'
To warm everyone up for the dictation, Omrop Fryslân is broadcasting an extra program on Tuesday evening, May 23, at 7:30 p.m: It Grut Frysk Diktee - De opwaarmer. Seated at Miranda Werkman's table are dictation writer Iris Kroes, Hindrik Sijens of the Fryske Akademy and deputy Sietske Poepjes. Subject of the conversation is Frisian. What does Frisian mean to them personally and how is Frisian currently doing?

Participate too!
People who are watching the program can also write along at home. The dictation text is reviewed and discussed during the broadcast and can be found afterwards at www.fryskdiktee.nl.
