Professor Ian Wood will give a public lecture in Tresoar (Leeuwarden) on Thursday evening 13 september 2018. Ian Wood is professor of Early Medieval Europe, and has published several books, including the prize-winning Fragments of History: Rethinking the Ruthwell and Bewcastle Monuments.
His work also covers the transition from the Roman Period to the Early Middle Ages, the barbarian invasions, cultural continuity and transformation, Christian missionary activity and conversion, Anglo-Saxon sculpture, and the history of the Franks.
In this one-off lecture, Ian Wood will focus specifically on the history, historiography, and cultural anthropology of the Early Medieval Frisians. He will also explain and discuss the ideas and experiences over a period of more than 25 years which have led to this new meeting in the series 'Historical Archaeoethnology'. The lecture will be given in English.

Historical Archaeoethnology of the Early Medieval Frisians
The public lecture is part of an international symposium which is held from 11 to 14 September 2018 in the Fries Museum. In this closed (by invitation only) symposium, a number of national and international experts will gather to discuss the questions of the cultural character and distinct identity of the Early Medieval Frisians.
The results will be published in the series Studies in Historical Archaeoethnology, which has been published since 1995 by Boydell & Brewer (Woodbridge, Suffolk, England).
