The Lânboukundich Wurkferbân of the Fryske Akademy and the Fries Landbouwmuseum are organising a lecture on Friday afternoon, 18 November. The start time is 14:00 hrs. The speaker is Ir. Petra Berkhout, who has been working as an agricultural economist and senior researcher at Wageningen Economic Research (WEcR, formerly LEI) since February 2001. The title of her lecture is: 'Promising earning models for the Frisian farmer and Agrofood sector. Approach from science' ('Kansrijke verdienmodellen voor de Friese boer en Agrofood sector: Benadering vanuit de wetenschap').

Background:

The countryside faces major challenges: making agriculture more sustainable, strengthening nature, reducing nitrogen deposition, slowing down climate change and improving water quality (think derogation) are themes that are in the news almost daily. All sectors must work on these, including - and especially - agriculture. How can the potential of Fryslân's agri-food sector be used to meet the challenges of the future while maintaining a good earning model for farmers?

Lecture series:

Around the theme described above, the Lânboukundig Wurkferbân of the Fryske Akademy is organising a series of meetings at the Fries Landbouwmuseum: three lectures in which the theme will be approached from the perspectives of science, business and politics. Petra Berkhout will kick off the event. Lubbert van Dellen of Flynth Adviseurs & Accountants will follow on 2 December. Commissioner Friso Douwstra will speak on a date to be determined in January.

About the speaker:

Ir. Petra Berkhout (1965) is an agricultural economist and has worked as a senior researcher at Wageningen Economic Research (WEcR, formerly LEI) since February 2001. Before that, she worked for ten years at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, among others, mainly in the field of European market and price policy for agriculture. In 2000, she made the switch to research. Research projects focus on policy advice to the (national) government on Dutch agriculture and horticulture and on monitoring and evaluation of (European) agricultural policy.
