Special edition of DIALECTOLOGIA on dialect classification of languages in Europe

In collaboration with colleagues at the University of the Basque Country (Basque Country) and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Slovenia), Prof Hans Van de Velde (Fryske Akademy/ Utrecht University) is working on the DIACLEU-project: Dialect Classifications of Languages in Europe

The aim of this project is to publish a complete, state-of-the-art and historical overview of dialect classifications of the endogenous languages spoken in Europe. The volume collects all the classifications published until now for these languages and makes them accessible for an international audience. Each paper is written according to a certain structure, allowing comparative research.

The first result of the DIACLEU project has now appeared: a special issue of the open access journal DIALECTOLOGIA, edited by the DIACLEU research team: Gotzon Aurrekeotxea, Ariane Ensunza, Jožica Škofic and Hans Van de Velde. This is the first of a total of four special issues of DIALECTOLOGIA on dialect classifications of languages in Europe.

The first issue includes articles on Basque, Finnish, Gallo-Romance, Greenlandic, Irish, Italian, Luxembourgish, Norwegian and Welsh. A later issue will also cover Frisian, in an article written by Prof Arjen Versloot (University of Groningen / University of Amsterdam).

Hans Van de Velde also contributed to the introduction to the theme issue of DIALECTOLOGIA. You can read it here.
