Historical linguist Dr Alex Kerkhof will give a lecture as part of the Weekend of Science on Saturday 7 October 2023: 'Waar komt 'Tsiis' vandaan?' What does the origin of Frisian farm words teach us about the distant past?

Farm words are often very old. But did you also know that some words existed for 7000 years and were sometimes brought to Fryslân from distant lands? In this lecture, we explore what the origins of Frisian and Dutch farming words tell us about farm life in the past.

Weekend of Science
Alex Kerkhof's lecture is part of a larger programme on Saturday 7 October. This includes various activities in the Beursgebouw, dBieb and at Grendel Games. Look here for an overview of activities or download the block schedule. Besides this day in Leeuwarden, hundreds of activities will be organised throughout the Netherlands at companies, universities, libraries, etc. during the weekend of 7 and 8 October. Everyone from young to old(er) can thus learn about the world of science and technology in an accessible way.
